The most disheartening event in the tech world this year, without exception. An independent open-source project was forced to rename its long-standing GitHub repository from Deepkit to untitled-code. A name filled with passion has turned into a string of nameless characters. What happened behind the scenes? Cause: The author @MarcJSchmidt registered the EU trademark for his TypeScript framework "Deepkit" for protection. Twist: A giant company "Deepki" that raised $160 million set its sights on this name and filed a request to the EU to revoke the trademark. Absurd ruling: The EU Trademark Office ruled the revocation valid. The reason was that the author could not provide sufficient evidence to prove that his trademark had "genuine use" in the EU. The GitHub stars, hundreds or thousands of GA visitors from the EU, and hundreds of thousands of npm downloads provided by the developer were all rejected because this data "could not be precisely attributed to EU users" or "could not prove commercial use." This is essentially a bloody lesson in risk education for all developers who respect user privacy and do not wish to over-collect data. And the most ironic scene of all is: This Deepki company, which crushes independent developers with its capital and legal advantages, prominently displays its B Corp™ certification on its official website, stating in its "Declaration of Benefit" that—"Businesses should aspire to do no harm and benefit all." On one hand, it erases the hard work of independent developers, while on the other, it touts itself as "doing good in business."

We have lost the Deepkit trademark in the EU (EUIPO) after a cancellation request from Deepki, on the grounds of “no genuine use.” The EUIPO decided that Deepkit showed no genuine use under their definition. Mainly due to lack of commercial revenue by the project itself I think
