Drive from Dogpatch to Soma and see:
1. A woman walking against traffic in partial fenty fold, holding a dog and looking like a survivor in an apocalypse film, probably going back to her tent or squat.
2. Guy passed out, bare feet extending into the street, causing Waymos to deviate to avoid. He comes to suddenly and locks eye contact with you, and you rapidly look away out of both embarrassment and fear at sparking an outburst.
One of the under-discussed costs of living in SF is how just driving past all this, numb from constant exposure, makes you feel complicit in this sordid state of affairs.
This tragic reality, the result of human weakness, catastrophic policy decisions, and the dissolution of the family and social fabric, just grinds at your humanity the longer you're in it. You can't really do anything about it, but you're definitely going along with it by default, a moral bind with no solution.
The mental cope is dissociating from anything resembling a social compact, atomizing you into an indifferent observer with no concern or responsibility for anyone else (never mind of course the harrowing lives of the people in question).
Trying to explain it to your kids is both an awkward and futile affair: the best you can convey is that this isn't normal, that society is broken in some deep way...but they too grow numb as you did (which doubly grinds at you).
What a social disaster this all is. But hey...the Waymos are cool.
