The “AI is causing a slowdown for new hires” hypothesis has pretty much been abandoned. The trend seems to pre-date GPT-4, and the trend seems to apply to tech jobs that have no serious AI competition.

If we want freedom to remain the world’s dominant operating system, we should fund it like our lives depend on it. Government programs and frameworks (like ESG) can’t solve problems that are really about our ability to build and compete. Capitalism can. Investors have the long-term orientation and risk appetite needed to rebuild our industrial base, strengthen our supply chains, and scale the technologies that matter. Here’s why we need a new lens: - We once led in 60 of 64 critical technologies. Now China leads in 57. - We rely on fragile or adversarial regions for critical materials and manufacturing. - ESG isn’t enough. We need GCI. We need capital that plays offense. - Venture can lead but pension funds, endowments and other large capital pools must follow.

One interesting theory on the national mood: vast majority of pop songs in the 1960s were written in a major key, estimates as high as 85 percent. That flipped sometime in the 2000s, with some studies showing 60-40 split favoring minor keys. Huh.

I can’t imagine the horrors happening inside a private home school that violated Palo Alto city code. God forbid they were learning calculus. Pray for these children.

The bright side of this realization is that it doesn’t take much to make a meme or message go viral. Say it over and over and over again and other people will start saying it too, with no knowledge of the original source. This is terrifying if you’re only consuming memes, but if you’re the meme maker, it’s infinite opportunity.

I’m a lifelong introvert and homebody, a natural loner. Even though I genuinely like people, introversion might be the thing that’s changed the least about me with time. I love being surrounded by family and not much else. But I’ve always marveled at the world-class extrovert and their ability to feast off the energy of everybody around them. They can’t help but make moves and just do things. They’re less fazed by digital distractions and far leas likely to be inward-focused or morose about the modern world. I’ve grown to admire these types so much. They’re the ones who will thrive in the chaos of our time.
