HUBBLE SPOTS A GALAXY WITH “ZOMBIE STAR” STREET CRED Meet NGC 1309 - a face-on spiral galaxy 100 million light-years away, looking like a cosmic pinwheel in Hubble’s latest image. It’s not just photogenic. This galaxy is a supernova hotspot, hosting the textbook Type Ia blast of SN 2002fk and the curveball Type Iax explosion of SN 2012Z - the latter leaving behind a so-called zombie star that shone brighter after blowing up. That makes NGC 1309 the first place astronomers have caught a star system in the act before it went supernova… and survived. It’s equal parts beauty shot and crime scene photo from deep space. HARVARD SCIENTIST SAYS INTERSTELLAR OBJECT COULD BE ALIEN PROBE Hubble images of 3I/ATLAS reveal a glow in front of its motion which comets do not display. Harvard’s Avi Loeb says it may be directed by intelligent life with the potential to save or destroy. Its path aligns closely with planetary orbits and it will vanish from view at its closest to the Sun on Halloween. Lawmakers are pressing NASA to extend missions and investigate before the chance for observation is lost. Source: New York Post
