This is an interesting article that sums up some of what we already know—but summarizes it again: OpenAIs cost-cutting with GPT-5.
When you consider that ChatGPT is used by 700 million weekly active users, of whom only 3% are paid users, it reveals the enormous scale and, at the same time, one of the problems facing OpenAI: costs.
As I have said several times before, the big advantage OpenAI currently has over its competitors is primarily distribution. For many outside our AI bubble, AI is almost synonymous with ChatGPT, just as online search is often synonymous with Google. However, this distribution advantage comes at a high price - literally.
At the same time, OpenAI constantly needs new cash to keep both training and inference running. Although the cooperation with Microsoft is paying off, OpenAI is in a worse position compared to competitors such as Google, which have a healthy and steady cash flow and very good revenue streams, as well as their own data centers with self-developed TPUs. Against this backdrop, it is only logical that GPT-5 has also placed a strong focus on efficiency.
